Medical Dermatologist vs Cosmetic Dermatologist

By: Qirat Ehtasham

Dermatologists are people that specialize in working with skin, hair, nails and even the mouth. Many people visit them on a regular basis for a variety of reasons. Did you know that dermatology can actually be split into 2 different branches. These are medical dermatology and cosmetic dermatology, but how do you know which one you're supposed to go to when you have skin concerns?

Well the one that you are probably most familiar with is medical dermatology, this is dermatologist that cures and treats skin, nails, and hair diseases. However cosmetic dermatologists are a bit different as they work at keeping people's faces aesthetically pleasing, by reversing the signs of aging. Like getting rid of wrinkles and face tightening.

Although both go a bit deeper. Cosmetic dermatologists apply treatments that include botox, dermal fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal, laser rejuvenation and resurfacing, vein reduction, skin tightening, etc. Cosmetic dermatology is purely for aesthetics and works on want rather than need. Cosmetic Surgeons performed more than 17.7 million surgical and cosmetic procedures in 2018 in America. Thanks to new and safe techniques and technological advances cosmetic dermatology is rapidly becoming more popular. Medical dermatologists work on treating skin rather than making it more appealing, some things that medical dermatologists work on are acne, skin cancer, eczema, warts, psoriasis, rosacea, alopecia, contact allergies, etc.

So the next time you need to visit the dermatologist think about this blog to figure out who you need to go to.
